In
troduction to Urban Sketching

- We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation.
- Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the places we live and where we travel.
- Our drawings are a record of time and place.
- We are truthful to the scenes we witness.
- We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles.
- We support each other and draw together.
- We share our drawings online.
- We show the world, one drawing at a time

UNDERPAINTING ON COPPER
Instructor: Patricia Rice  •  www.PatriciaRiceStudio.com

During the Baroque Period, Dutch and Spanish masters painted small scale works on copper plates. What they didn’t know then, but what we know now, is that copper is the most archival surface on which to paint in oil! This unique surface, with its warm glow, creates radiant paintings, especially when bits of the copper are left exposed.

Students in this class worked from a live model in Rice's home studio using burnt umber and white oil paint to create the portrait. This underpainting can stand on its own as a painting.
